Memories of dad, addendum 1

Last night I remembered something else my dad was good at -- no great at. Pumpkin carving. He hadn't done an elaborate pumpkin for us in years -- so many things he expected us to grow out of, like jack-o-lanterns and dying easter eggs, but I never have.

Anyway, he could carve some amazing pumpkins completely unaided by templates or designs or special tools like they have today. I can remember him sketching designs with his carpenter's pencil and then working with our everyday kitchen knives (and probably an Exacto knife too). He could create these incredible images by adjusting the depth of the pumpkin flesh -- not every cut went all the way through.

I can remember scary pumpkins and funny ones. I know there are pictures somewhere, so I will hunt for them next time I go to mom's house and scan them in for your enjoyment.
